This year at the annual state association breakfast at the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International, the National Association of Wastewater Technicians was pleased to present a $1,000 scholarship to Carolyn Phillips of Mechanicsburg, Pa. She currently attends Pace University. The scholarship was created in memory of William Hapchuk, a long-time supporter and champion of the industry, to provide support to industry children and relatives to further their education.

The charge to this year’s applicants was to “create and design a slogan or a bumper sticker representing NAWT, and then write a 250-500 word essay of why you think NAWT should choose your slogan/bumper sticker.” The winning slogan was “NAWT Your Average Superhero.” Phillips’ bumper sticker design and the accompanying essay is posted at www.nawt.org.

In the future, the NAWT board would like to be able to offer more than one scholarship, so donations to the fund are always accepted. We continue to build the scholarship endowment with contributions from affiliated state associations. Please consider adding this scholarship fund to your list of charitable donations. If you or your company would like to help a young person interested in wastewater treatment get a college education, consider including a contribution to the scholarship with your payment of dues, or contact NAWT for more information at info@nawt.org or 800/236-6298.

Remember to encourage upcoming high school seniors and current college students to apply for the William Hapchuk Memorial Scholarship! NAWT awards a $1,000 scholarship every year to the winner of the NAWT essay contest. Applicants must submit an application by Jan. 15, 2015. The application and information on the required topic can be downloaded at www.nawt.org.

The winner will be notified on or shortly after Feb. 1, 2015.

Please be reminded that you may reapply for this scholarship annually.

NAWT Excellence in Service Award

It is not too early to begin preparing your nomination for the Excellence in Service Award. The NAWT board established the Excellence in Service Award in 2010 to recognize an individual or company the NAWT board feels has exhibited exceptional service to the wastewater profession. The nomination criteria and instructions are available at the NAWT website. This year the timeline for receipt of applications is Oct. 1. This award is presented annually at the state association breakfast during the Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport (WWETT) show (formerly the Pumper & Cleaner Expo). The award winner is brought to the expo for the presentation. It is a great way to recognize those who work hard to advance industry professionalism but receive very little recognition. For detailed nomination criteria and instructions visit the NAWT website www.nawt.org.
