In Calgary there are more than 50 hydroexcavators. Most are owned by Badger Daylighting and Cordy Environmental, but there are smaller operations as well.
Allstar Hydrovacing is one of those, with three trucks and a staff of seven. Brent Bossio started his business in 2013 with help from another small hydroexcavation company that allowed him to rent one of its trucks until he could buy one of his own. Allstar Hydrovacing now owns three Tornado F4 hydroexcavators.
“When I started up, a couple of my friends also started up,” Bossio says. “I have one buddy who has four trucks and another who has three.”
The smaller companies tend to stick to their own territories, but will help one another if needed. Bossio now rents out his shop to a friendly competitor.
“They have a job they are working on here, so they are able to use my shop,” Bossio says. “They were the ones I bought my first truck from and they helped me out a lot. I try to return the favor to people who have been there since day one for me.”
Bossio has been called in to assist when that company has needed an extra truck on a job site.
“We have the ability to take on the large companies,” Bossio says. “We still remain small companies, but we work together to complete the big jobs.”
