There’s something about August that hits different in this industry. The long days, the high heat, the packed schedules — it’s the peak of the season, and for many crews, this is when the real grind begins. Big projects are in full swing, deadlines are tightening and it feels like there’s never quite enough time, hands or daylight to get it all done.

It’s the kind of pressure that can either wear teams down or bring out their best. And most of the contractors I’ve talked to lately are seeing both. You can’t blame anyone for feeling the weight — especially in this business. The jobs are demanding, the equipment is working overtime and so are the people. But the impressive thing is how many companies are not just enduring the summer grind, but leaning into it.

LEADERSHIP AND MOTIVATION

The most effective teams right now are the ones where leaders are doing more than managing workloads — they’re setting the tone, staying visible and reminding their crews why the work matters. Whether it’s a citywide utility upgrade, a high-profile commercial site or a community infrastructure project, there’s pride in being part of something big.

But pride alone doesn’t beat burnout. It takes communication, planning and a willingness to adapt. I’ve heard of companies shifting start times to beat the worst of the heat. Another company has added small but impactful perks — cold water stations, shaded break areas and even end-of-week cookouts. These aren’t gimmicks; they’re practical investments in morale. And in this kind of weather and workload, morale matters more than ever.

This month’s issue of Dig Different shows a contractor taking on one of these summer projects and talks about how they treat their employees. This crew, from Subterraneous Inc. tackled a big fiber installation project in southern Wisconsin in late spring, early summer and since then hasn’t slowed down all summer. Find out how they’ve kept efficiency — and spirits — high on this job and others they’ve tackled.

NO SLOWING DOWN

This work doesn’t slow down just because it’s tough outside. But it does require a mindset that balances hustle with care — for your people, your equipment and yourself. The summer grind is real, but so is the opportunity. The work you’re doing now builds more than infrastructure. It builds your reputation, your crew’s skills and your business’s future.

So here’s to the dig crews, vac truck operators, drillers, foremen, techs and support teams showing up every day and pushing through. The heat may be relentless, but so is your dedication — and that’s what sets this industry apart.

As always, we’re here to share your stories, highlight your wins and help you dig a little smarter through every season. Keep grinding, keep leading and let us know how you’re keeping your team motivated during the dog days of summer. Email me at editor@digdifferent.com.
