For cutting large 16- to 24-inch holes in rock, you’re looking for heavy-duty industrial equipment. These specialized tools have carbide teeth on a rotating head to grind through hard rock, often requiring significant machinery for such substantial diameters. The Penta-Bore from Rock Bit Industries is just such a tool.

“The Penta-Bore is a five-cutter tool designed to cut large holes in rock with a PSI greater than 6,000,” says Robert Light, business development manager for Rock Bit Industries. “We’ve had plenty of customers tell us that this is the only rock tooling they will ever use.”

That’s because the reamer is built tough in Texas using American steel. According to Light, its bearings are saddled in place to prevent cutter loss, and are designed for long hours and increased rate of penetration. Consumables are in stock and, in most cases, can be shipped on the same day. This means that the contractor no longer needs to purchase a standby tool reducing the upfront cost of tooling. Light says the modular nature of the tool gives it a natural advantage in the market.

“The development of this tool should always be credited to Mr. Kent Rives,” says Light. “In the early 1970s, Kent imagined, developed and patented a rock tool design that would allow the driller to select and assemble tooling on location. The ability to change the size and International Association of Drilling Contractors type with minimal downtime can seriously increase the drilling contractor’s bottom line.”

Rock Bit Industries prides itself on the level of service and support that comes with this product line. According to Light, technicians are available and knowledgeable, and the company has the ability to stock inventory on location if need be,eliminating costly hotshots and downtime. “One easy call and it’s on the way,” says Light. “You always get a tracking number and notice of delivery with all products.”

“I can count on this tool being on the job when needed,” adds Danny Tweedel, president/CEO of Crossings Inc., a horizontal directional drilling and boring contractor based out of Texas. “Rock Bit Industries takes care of tool maintenance, so we don’t have to manage and transport inventory. Don’t underestimate the value created by using the best tools available.”
