In the ever-changing world of underground construction, staying excited and passionate is what keeps this industry thriving.
As we continue our journey of revisiting past profiles in Dig Different, it’s both inspiring and reassuring to see companies like the one formerly known as Ontario Excavac still driven by that same energy and enthusiasm.
We last profiled this company — now known as OE Utility Services — 10 years ago. I remember interviewing company CEO Barry Wood back then and the biggest thing that came to me was how excited he was for the industry.
While there have been changes with the company as you’ll read in this issue, that enthusiasm for the industry is still there from Barry. It’s a testament to the resilience of this industry and the people who make it their mission to continually push the boundaries of what’s possible.
CELEBRATING EXCITEMENT
This excitement and drive are exactly what we’ll be celebrating at the upcoming Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment and Transport Show in February. For many in the industry, the WWETT Show is more than just an event — it’s an annual gathering of like-minded professionals who share a passion for innovation and excellence in the field. It’s a chance to see old friends, forge new connections and get a firsthand look at the cutting-edge technologies that are shaping the future of water and wastewater management.
As editor, I’ve had the privilege of attending the WWETT Show year after year, and it never fails to recharge my enthusiasm for what you do. Whether it’s the hum of new equipment on display, the buzz of conversations around sustainable practices or the hands-on demonstrations that highlight the latest advancements in trenchless technology, the energy in the room is contagious. This event is not just about showcasing products; it’s about celebrating the shared mission of protecting our water resources and improving infrastructure.
The show offers an invaluable opportunity for professional growth. The educational sessions provide insights from industry veterans and thought leaders who are at the forefront of new developments. Whether you’re looking to expand your service offerings, adopt more efficient technologies or simply keep up with regulatory changes, the WWETT Show is the place to be. It’s where new ideas are born and where industry players like Barry Wood continue to refine their strategies to stay competitive.
KEEPING THE SPIRIT GOING
Reflecting on the past profiles we’re revisiting, I’m reminded that while technology and ownership structures may change, the core values that drive this industry remain the same: passion, innovation and a commitment to doing the job right. That’s what makes companies like OE Utility Services so compelling. They embody the spirit of constant improvement while never losing sight of their roots.
At Dig Different, we’re committed to telling the stories of these companies — big and small — that are driving the industry forward. It’s our way of showcasing not just the technology, but the people behind it. They are the real lifeblood of the utility construction industry, continually innovating and pushing for better ways to serve customers and protect the environment.
I can’t wait to see you all at the WWETT Show, to hear your stories, and to capture the excitement that’s sure to be in the air. Let’s keep the momentum going and make 2025 a year of growth, innovation and renewed passion for everything this industry has to offer.
