Vacuum excavation streamlines lead service line inventory
PROBLEM: Brewer Water Department in Maine faced a significant challenge in complying with the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Revisions. Serving 9,000 residents through 3,500 service connections, they needed to verify materials for thousands of service lines, many installed decades ago with incomplete records.
SOLUTION: The department invested in a VXT300 truck vacuum excavator from Vermeer MV Solutions to efficiently complete their service line inventory. Built on a Kenworth T880 chassis, the unit features an 8-cubic-yard spoil tank, 6-inch dig tube and 800-gallon water capacity. The PTO-driven system delivers 3,500 cfm maximum flow and 18 inches Hg maximum suction, providing the power needed for efficient excavation at varying depths.
RESULT: Using the vacuum excavator, Brewer’s team has developed a streamlined verification process that takes just 30 to 45 minutes per location, compared to hours with traditional methods. The crew completes one to two more services daily while experiencing reduced physical strain. The precise excavation method creates minimal disturbance with an 18-inch-diameter hole, eliminating the need for extensive restoration work. Beyond lead line verification, the department uses the vacuum excavator for mainline valve box replacement and valve nut repair in conjunction with conventional excavation, maximizing their investment. The implementation has helped the department gain recognition for Maine’s Best Drinking Water in 2020 and Excellence in Operations in 2023.
